The gold coin said to have saved the life of a Confederate soldier at the Battle of Shiloh has been recovered from the wreckage of the Civil War submarine H. L. Hunley, salvagers said in Charleston, S.C.

The coin belonging to the submarine’s commander, Lt. George Dixon, was one of the most sought-after artifacts on the Confederate sub, which was raised off the South Carolina coast last year.

Dixon had been wounded at Shiloh in 1862, but his life was spared when a bullet hit a gold coin in his pocket. He was said to have had the coin with him when the Hunley sank in 1864.
