Crews Stop Spread of Fire North of Reno

Firefighters gained the upper hand Saturday on a 2,511-acre wildland fire on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, 30 miles northeast of here.

The so-called Warrior Fire was fully contained Saturday night, fire information officers said.

More than 150 firefighters battled the flames, which exploded Friday after smoldering for about a day following a lightning strike.

The fire was centered about two miles west of Nevada Route 445 in the hills overlooking the west side of Pyramid Lake.

No structures were threatened, and the blaze led to no restrictions or closures of Pyramid Lake recreation facilities.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were hampered by steep terrain and erratic fire behavior. The blaze burned in pinyon pine, juniper, sagebrush and grass.

Meanwhile, a 75-acre wildfire on the lower slopes of Peavine Peak just northwest of Reno was contained Saturday morning.

Despite high winds that pushed flames away from residences on Robb Drive, firefighters launched an all-out attack against the blaze after it broke out late Friday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Another blaze had blackened 400 acres just off Interstate 80 near Imlay, 150 miles northeast of Reno. The lightning-caused fire was burning in grass and brush.
