Communists Victorious in Parliamentary Vote

From Times Wire Reports

For the first time since the end of British rule in 1960, a communist party won parliamentary elections in the Greek Cypriot portion of this Mediterranean island.

AKEL won 34.7% of the vote, compared with 34.1% for President Glafcos Clerides’ Democratic Rally party.

Sunday’s vote does not affect Clerides’ position, but the new parliament will have a key role in adopting legislation in support of European Union membership. AKEL, an acronym for the Reformist Party of the Working People, is in favor of joining the EU.
