Proposal to Restrict Tobacco Ads Revived
The European Union’s head office proposed tough new restrictions that could outlaw cigarette ads in newspapers and magazines and at international sports events.
The European Commission’s proposals--which would also ban tobacco ads on radio and the Internet--came after a previous ban was overturned in October following a court challenge by the German government, tobacco companies and advertisers.
EU Health Commissioner David Byrne said in Brussels that he is confident the new rules will win approval from EU governments, withstand any legal challenges and become law across the 15-nation bloc by 2004.
