The Nobel Peace Prize-winning Physicians for Human Rights urged leaders of the Afghan opposition to include women and ethnic minorities in plans for a new government in a post-Taliban Afghanistan.

The group said in Boston that Afghanistan has a history of including women in civic and political life, and it urged a planned grand council of elders, religious and tribal leaders to include them in the transition process.

Before the Taliban takeover, women accounted for 70% of teachers, 50% of civil servants and 40% of medical doctors in Afghanistan, the group said.
