Troops loyal to a former president attempted a coup in Anjouan, an Indian Ocean island that declared independence from the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros in 1997. One person was killed and five were wounded.
Troops backing Lt. Col. Said Abeid Abderemanein, who was ousted in an Aug. 9 coup, took over the radio station and port late Friday. But forces loyal to the current junta still were in control of Anjouan’s airport, witnesses said.
The casualties occurred when a shell hit a hospital in Mutsamudu, staff said.
