Mystery Man Buried in Afghanistan City

From Times Wire Reports

Aid workers in a southern Afghan city buried the body of a man who was originally identified by the Taliban as an American, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

Red Cross officials in Islamabad declined to identify the man, confirming only that he was not Afghan and not American.

The Taliban had identified the man as John Bolton of California, but the Red Cross was unable to locate the next of kin and decided to bury the body in the city rather than move it across the border into Pakistan, said Pascal Duport, the deputy head of the Kabul office of the Red Cross. He was in Islamabad on Wednesday.

It was unclear what the man had been doing in Afghanistan, where the ruling Taliban have endured more than five weeks of American bombing. The U.S. military campaign began after the Taliban refused to hand over Osama bin Laden.
