Death of Nazi Suspect Ends Extradition Battle
A man suspected of committing war crimes as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp during World War II has died, bringing an end to a lengthy effort to send him to Latvia for trial.
Justice Minister Chris Ellison confirmed the death of Konrad Kalejs, 88, who had cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, but he did not release the cause of death.
Kalejs was accused of being an officer at the Salaspils concentration camp in Latvia.
Kalejs denied the allegation and had battled extradition for years. He last appeared in court Oct. 23.
