New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik and City Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen, who won acclaim for their roles in handling the Sept. 16 terror attacks on the World Trade Center, said Friday they were leaving their jobs.

Kerik said he would depart when his term ends on Jan. 1. He declined to stay on as the highest ranking police officer under the incoming administration of Michael Bloomberg, who was elected mayor of the country’s biggest city Tuesday.

Von Essen, who was appointed by outgoing Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani to the post in March 1996, has clashed with union leaders, and firefighters recently booed him at a rock concert for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.
