Edison Defense Turns Out Lights

Share

Defense took the spotlight for Huntington Beach Edison on Friday night. Bubba Reynolds returned an interception for a touchdown and the Chargers clamped down on Fountain Valley in the second half of the Sunset League game, leading them to a 19-10 victory in front of 8,500 at Orange Coast College.

The victory gave Edison (8-0-1 overall, 4-0-1 in league) a share of the league title with Los Alamitos, which defeated Esperanza, 38-10, Friday. It’s the Chargers first league title since 1990.

“We tend to get overlooked with all the players we have on offense,” said Reynolds, who also had a sack for the Chargers. Fountain Valley (6-3-1, 1-3-1) led, 7-6, after Casey Clark hit Joey Flores on a 54-yard touchdown pass play with 1 minute 16 seconds remaining in the first half.

Edison’s high-powered offense was held scoreless in the first half, the only points coming on Reynolds’ 17-yard interception return. It was the first interception for Reynolds this season.

The Chargers moved ahead, 12-7, on their first drive of the second half. Edison center Sean Campregher kept the drive alive by recovering a fumble by teammate Chuckie Linman, and the Chargers got another break when A.J. Martinez stepped out of bounds just before his fumble hit the goal-line pylon. On the next play, Martinez ran in for the touchdown.
