Diplomats Say Al Qaeda Cells Are Broken Up
Saudi Arabia has broken up cells linked to Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda terrorist network that were operating in the kingdom, diplomats in Riyadh said.
They said Saudi authorities had rounded up about 400 people soon after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, while a few hundred others left the country for Afghanistan before the crackdown began.
None of the detainees appeared to have been directly involved in the hijacked airliner assaults on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but Saudi investigations found that a number did have direct links with Al Qaeda, the diplomats said.
