Hobbled by a broken knee and steadied by President Bush’s hand, former South African President Nelson Mandela appeared in the White House Rose Garden with an unconditional message of support for Bush’s war on terrorist targets in Afghanistan.

“It would be disastrous if the president gave in to the call that the army must now withdraw before he has actually flushed out the terrorist,” Mandela said.

Mandela, in Washington to promote his ongoing peace initiatives for Burundi, met with Bush in the Oval Office.
