Opposition forces claimed control of nearly all of Afghanistan amid signs that Taliban soldiers had fled to the hills to prepare for the kind of guerrilla warfare they once waged against Soviet troops.

RESCUE

Eight foreign relief workers--including two American women--who were accused by the Taliban of preaching Christianity were ferried out of Afghanistan to safety by U.S. Special Forces helicopters. They appeared to be in good condition, officials said.
