Tourism Off 10%-12% in City, Giuliani Says
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said tourism had fallen 10% to 12% since two hijacked jets brought down the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 but added that a desire to be patriotic still was inspiring people to come to town.
“The reality is you have different emotions that are out there. One emotion is fear. You have this terrorist attack, the whole anthrax situation, you have the recent crash,” he said. “But the other emotion is defiance and a desire to be patriotic, and it’s bringing a lot of people to New York City.”
Retail sales in the city’s boroughs--except Manhattan--and the surrounding metropolitan area are doing about as well as the rest of the nation, Jason Bram, a Federal Reserve economist, said.
But stores in Manhattan are getting hit harder than stores in the other boroughs and Westchester County, he said.
