Floods Did $293 Million in Damage, Officials Say
Massive floods and mudslides that devastated northern Algeria and killed more than 700 people caused at least $293 million in damage, the interior minister said.
Heavy rains pounded the capital and nearby areas starting Nov. 9, and the resulting mudslides knocked down buildings, overturned vehicles and filled roads with mounds of dirt and debris. The official death count stood at 729, with 170 people still missing. Hundreds were injured.
“Experts are still counting the material losses,” Interior Minister Yazid Zerhouni said.
