DIPLOMACY
A top United States diplomat accused Iraq, North Korea, Libya, Syria and Sudan of pursuing germ weapon programs, a charge that increases the pressure on nations to sign and follow international accords. The official told an international conference that Iraq’s biological weapon program is “beyond dispute” and that the other countries are believed to be developing such weapons.
WAR FRONT
Rebel forces told as many as 30,000 surrounded Taliban fighters in Kunduz that they have until today to surrender, as the U.S. warned that America will be at risk if the rebels allow those hard-line “foreign” troops to go free.
Pentagon planners do not plan to send U.S. Special Forces on a cave-by-cave search for Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders, leaving the perilous task to American air power, opposition fighters and bounty hunters.
SECURITY
President Bush signed into law a wide-ranging aviation security bill that he said “should give all Americans greater confidence when they fly.”
