Burning Down the Cake

For about 80 years, my great-aunt, mother and I have made something like the oat cake you describe(“Fetes, Soups and Charity,” Nov. 7). Except after the frosting is spread on the cake, place the cake under the broiler until the frosting bubbles up, the sugar melts a bit and some of the coconut browns on the ends. Much better!
