From Times Staff Reports

In a move intended to create more usable space downtown, city officials are transforming a shuttered citrus packing plant into quarters for firefighters and public works employees.

Work will soon begin on the second phase of the $1-million renovation project that will provide a combined fire station and public works yard at the former Fillmore-Piru Citrus Assn. fruit-packing plant.

The dual facility on Sespe Place will allow the city to ultimately discontinue using two sites in the downtown business district.

The city bought the former packinghouse in 1999. City officials say the remodeled building is expected to improve efficiency and services, save taxpayers money and allow the Fire Department to more quickly respond to calls.
