Global Corporations

Richard A. Bowen (letter, Nov. 20) called Arianna Huffington a hypocrite for buying a foreign-made car (Volvo) instead of supporting the American economy and buying domestic.

Ford Motor Co. owns Volvo. A quick check of the https://www.volvocars.com Web site reveals the Ford logo in the lower right. In fact, many foreign brands are either American-owned or have manufacturing facilities in the U.S. that provide Americans with jobs. In addition, many foreign-owned companies are good corporate citizens that contribute to our economy through corporate taxes, jobs, sponsorships, scholarships, charities and other means.

Like it or not, the United States is a part of the global economy. As such, protectionist attitudes are anachronistic at best and downright damaging to the economy at worst.
