ALLIES

After missteps and recriminations following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia appear to have repaired their alliance and are cooperating well in the war on terrorism, officials in both governments say.

BIN LADEN

For some of his time in Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden lived with one of his wives and several of his children in a sprawling, mud-walled compound in a village outside Jalalabad, returning after Sept. 11, then departing with his family and other Arabs, a moujahedeen commander said.

An advance by Northern Alliance forces surrounding the last Taliban stronghold in northern Afghanistan stopped after reports that Afghans fighting for the Taliban had agreed to surrender.

No traces of anthrax spores were found in preliminary tests of the home, mail or garbage of the 94-year-old Connecticut woman who died of the disease, officials said.
