Mother Tongue
I was disturbed to read that West Virginia is “America’s most English-dependent state” (Nov. 20). Dependent? If we speak only the language of the United States, are we somehow tainted? Looking at your statistic that only 2.2% of West Virginia residents speak another language, I find it comforting to know I could communicate with 98% of them by using English. It’s great to have the ability to speak more than one language, but English-only speakers are not inferior and not “dependent.”
