U.S. Navy warplanes attacked a column of Taliban personnel carriers near Marine positions in southern Afghanistan as the Islamic movement appeared on the verge of surrendering key areas along the border with Pakistan. Elsewhere, Northern Alliance forces entered Kunduz with a blare of car horns, ending 10 days of siege and negotiation. Cheering residents filled the streets.

WASHINGTON WARNING

Iraq and other countries that develop weapons of mass destruction “will be held accountable” in the war against terrorism, President Bush said. He stopped short of threatening military action but said Iraqi President Saddam Hussein will “find out” the consequences if he continues to block entry of U.N. weapon inspectors.
