Bangladeshis voted in parliamentary elections under tight security after one of the bloodiest campaigns in the country’s history.

Sheik Hasina Wajed and Begum Khaleda Zia are vying for the post of prime minister in the predominantly Muslim country. Both women have served as prime minister before. Authorities deployed about 55,000 soldiers and 200,000 police for the election for the 300-seat Parliament.

The show of force emboldened voters, especially women, and scared off trouble-makers, officials said. However, six people died and 100 were injured in election-related violence outside the capital, Dhaka.
