80 Diamond Diggers Slain; Rebels Blamed
Rebels gunned down more than 80 diamond diggers in an attack in northern Angola, Voice of America radio in Luanda, the capital, reported.
“More than 80 people were killed and various others wounded while others fled into the bush after an attack near Cuango,” said the U.S. radio service, which has a local station in Luanda.
A local source blamed Saturday’s attack on members of the rebel National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, or UNITA. The source said the rebels waged the attack to steal food.
