Reader Urges Local Nonpartisan Votes

Re “Keep the Parties Out of Local Races,” Sept. 30:

I found Shirley Grindle’s column insightful and accurate. Unfortunately, Orange Unified School District voters have been subjected to partisan politics in school board elections as recently as the special recall election on June 26.

High-ranking officials within the Republican Party not only threw their support and donations behind the targets of the recall, but sought the support of other registered Republicans against the recall. Almost all of them were not residents of our district, and did not have children in our schools. Worse than that was the fact that they did not even understand the issues.

This, of course, backfired for these politicians when the recall succeeded and so many Republicans were alienated by these actions within our community. Local elections such as city council races and school board elections should be nonpartisan.
