Changes in Store for Northern Ireland Police
Northern Ireland’s controversial Royal Ulster Constabulary police force will have a new name beginning Nov. 4, when recruits will start training for a revamped service, Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid announced.
The force is being renamed the Police Service of Northern Ireland as part of reforms under the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement.
Protestant and Roman Catholic parties agreed last month, despite deep differences about the reforms, to nominate representatives to a “policing board.” But the main Catholic party, Sinn Fein, has refused to serve on it, saying Britain’s plans fall short of promised changes.
