MILITARY FRONT
American ground forces in southern Afghanistan swarmed the home of the ruling Taliban’s leader as well as a military airfield, the first of many planned raids designed to decimate terrorist networks. The operations produced the first U.S. combat fatalities since the military operation began. The investigation continued into the crash of a helicopter in Pakistan that killed two soldiers and injured three.
ANTHRAX
Investigators have found traces of the bacteria in the mail room of a Capitol Hill office building that serves the House of Representatives. The discovery was the first sign of anthrax spores on the House side of the Capitol complex.
HEALTH
* Anxious postal workers in suburban Trenton, N.J., lined up at a hospital to be tested for exposure to anthrax. Investigators have traced two contaminated letters to the area and are combing for clues.
* Blood banks, flooded with donations in the days after the terrorist attacks, are scrambling to use supplies before expiration dates this week. Red blood cells have a shelf life of seven weeks.
