Felony Charge Avoided in Attack on Afghan

A prominent Oklahoma doctor won’t be charged with a felony hate crime but could face a misdemeanor for a confrontation with a taxi driver from Afghanistan.

Police arrested Dr. Stanley Grogg, a professor at Oklahoma State University and president of the American Osteopathic Assn., Oct. 20 after he allegedly put his hands around the driver’s neck as if to choke him and punched the man outside a downtown hotel.

Oklahoma doctor--An Oct. 27 news brief in the California section incorrectly reported the affiliation of a Tulsa, Okla., doctor arrested in San Diego after a confrontation with a taxi driver from Afghanistan. Dr. Stanley Grogg is president of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians.

Grogg was angry over what he considered an inappropriate comment by the driver about the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to his lawyer.
