Question: What causes liver spots?

Answer: Liver spots have nothing to do with the liver. Like freckles, these flat dark patches are caused by cumulative exposure to the sun and are harmless. They typically occur on sun-exposed skin, such as hands, arms, shoulders and faces, of people older than 55. They can be lightened with prescription bleaching creams (over-the-counter bleaching creams do not work), but months of application are required.
