Share

Juan Munoz, 48, a sculptor whose enigmatic work has been featured in exhibitions around the world, died of a heart attack Tuesday while vacationing on the island of Ibiza off Spain’s Mediterranean coast.

Born in Madrid in 1953, Munoz studied art and design in London and New York. His work has been featured in collections of many major museums, including the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

“Juan Munoz was a distinctive figure within a generation of European artists whose work has significantly extended the language of sculpture,” said Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate. “His figurative sculpture drew on Spanish tradition but was informed by an understanding of modernist practice.”

A previously scheduled retrospective of Munoz’s work is due to open at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington in October.

It will be on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles from April 21 to July 28.
