The U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria reopened after a security check, but the embassy in Romania was to remain closed at least through the weekend, State Department spokesman Philip T. Reeker said.

The facilities were closed Thursday after reports of a potential threat emanating from the Middle East. No details were provided by the department, although an official said the threat apparently was unrelated to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or to Osama bin Laden, a Saudi expatriate living in Afghanistan who is accused by the United States of plotting terrorist attacks against U.S. interests.
