Sawing Work Resumes on Sunken Submarine

Share

Salvage workers used a huge underwater saw to cut halfway through the mangled bow of the sunken nuclear submarine Kursk, which is to be raised this month.

The Russian sub has been on the floor of the Barents Sea since it sank Aug. 12, 2000, killing all 118 men aboard.

The disfigured fore section is being cut off and will be left behind because it may contain unexploded torpedoes that could threaten the lifting operation.

A snapped cable had stopped the saw work Tuesday, but it resumed Thursday, the Dutch companies working on the submarine said.

Russian Rear Adm. Gennady Verich, who is in charge of the Russian divers at the site, told NTV television that the cutting could be completed within three days.
