Landmark Trial Over Heartburn Drug Begins

A U.S. drug company, one of its subsidiaries and several pharmacies went on trial, accused of negligently distributing a heartburn drug that may be linked to the deaths of at least 80 people.
The trial, the first of its kind involving the drug Propulsid, pits 155 plaintiffs against Johnson & Johnson of New Brunswick, N.J., a subsidiary and three pharmacies.
The plaintiffs are suing each defendant in Claiborne County Circuit Court for $1 billion.
