OCN Signs Off After 11-Year Run on Cable
After efforts to find a buyer failed, Orange County’s only 24-hour news channel planned to go off the air at midnight Friday because of financial problems.
The Orange County NewsChannel, or OCN, wrapped up its last live newscast at 9 p.m., ending an 11-year run for the station, which was available to about 600,000 cable-TV subscribers in the county.
A total of 67 full-time jobs were eliminated, although the owner, Adelphia Communications Corp., will try to find jobs for employees elsewhere in the company, said William Rosendahl, a regional vice president.
“Nothing came of the offers or proposals that went to our corporate office,” Rosendahl said.
Adelphia’s cable subscribers in the Anaheim-Brea-Yorba Linda area will receive programming from the independent station KXLA-TV of Los Angeles on the old OCN channel, while the Travel Channel will be shown to viewers in Santa Ana, Newport Beach, Seal Beach, Fullerton, Placentia and Buena Park.
OCN features such as “Prime Story” and “Anaheim Angels Notebook” will be incorporated into other local programming.
