From Times Wire Reports

In a perilous race against time, workers with picks and shovels struggled to remove boulders and silt that were frustrating efforts to drain a volcanic lake atop Mt. Pinatubo, and some success was reported.

A day after a canal was opened on the rim of the Philippine crater, scientists said the flow of water was increasing and the danger from the water was beginning to ease.

Without relief from the weight of the water, the jagged crater walls could crack, burying villages up to 25 miles away in debris.
