Students and Staff Feel a Special Loss
Five times Wednesday, Principal Carol Burris took over English classes at South Side High School in Rockville Centre.
The regular teacher had stayed home, awaiting word of her missing husband, who had been working on the 90th floor of the World Trade Center. He was one of 27 immediate family members reported missing by the district’s students and staffers.
“There’s almost no life on Long Island left untouched,” said William Johnson, the district’s superintendent, who is also president of the New York State Council of School Superintendents.
