Hundreds of flowers and cards piled up at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto as sympathizers came to express their grief.

James McCallum, an American exchange student in Toronto, burst into tears as he placed his bouquet.

His twin, Robert, was killed when a hijacked airliner attacked the Pentagon. Wednesday was their birthday.

“I just don’t understand,” McCallum said, sobbing and shaking as he clutched a single red carnation. Strangers passing by offered him their condolences.
