Border Traffic Searched in Both Directions
U.S. Customs officials confirmed that they were searching southbound as well as northbound traffic along the 2,100-mile border with Mexico as part of increased security following Tuesday’s terrorist attacks.
Security has been extremely tight all along the border, with Customs agents replacing their usual random checks with detailed searches of every car heading into the United States.
On Thursday, they were seen in Texas at the Juarez, Eagle Pass and Laredo crossings expanding their search to cars driving from the United States into Mexico.
Kevin Bell, a Customs spokesman in Washington, confirmed that the southbound searches were being conducted at select border crossings, but for security reasons he did not indicate which ones were involved or when and why the searches began.
