Hewlett-Packard Co. and Compaq Computer Corp. said their record-breaking merger was on track despite this week’s terrorist attacks and the virtual standstill in financial activity.

H-P announced plans early this month to take over Compaq in the world’s largest technology merger, a deal that was panned on Wall Street and sent both firms’ share prices sharply lower.

An HP spokesman said talks aimed at winning investor backing for the deal would go on despite the tragedy, although he was not sure of the schedule.

A Compaq spokesman said his company had postponed a Tuesday employee meeting and that executives will speak with industry analysts Wednesday by telephone rather than in person in Boston, as originally planned.
