Mental Health Clinics Desperate for Doctors

From Times Wire Reports

Four state-run mental health clinics in southern Nevada will stay open during a critical psychiatrist shortage, but a state official says clients will face longer waits and reduced staffing.

The Mental Health and Developmental Services Division is in crisis because of recruitment difficulties. Only six of 18 psychiatrist positions in southern Nevada are filled; three employees are on extended medical leave. The shortage worsened this summer when a new law required many visiting psychiatrists to take a competence test.

Agency administrator Carlos Brandenburg said a plea has been made to local psychiatrists for help during the shortage.
