Subpoenas Issued in Refinery Fire Probe
A federal board is issuing subpoenas to Motiva Enterprises officials in connection with a fire and sulfuric acid spill at an oil refinery that injured eight people and left one person missing, a board spokesman said in Delaware City, Del.
Subpoenas by the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board were necessary because Motiva executives have not responded to board requests for voluntary interviews for more than eight weeks, said Robert Wager, the board’s director of congressional and public affairs.
During the July 17 accident, a fire caused a storage tank to collapse. About 1 million gallons of sulfuric acid spilled, some of it killing thousands of fish as it reached the Delaware River.
