An Argentine judge ordered the arrest of 18 officials from the country’s 1976-83 regime at the request of Spanish Judge Baltazar Garzon, who is seeking their extradition on charges of terrorism and genocide.

A Buenos Aires court official said a federal judge ordered the detention of 12 former military men and six civilians and would now await an extradition request from Garzon, best known for his unsuccessful attempt to prosecute former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet on torture and other charges.

The military took control of Argentina in 1976 and waged a “dirty war” of executions and intimidation to eradicate suspected leftists.
