The number of dead and missing after terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was too many for parishioners at Bible Baptist Church to comprehend.

That’s why they’re staking 5,000 white crosses in a nearby field. Standing among the wooden crosses, they imagine the thousands who lost their lives when terrorists slammed hijacked airplanes into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center.

The number of people missing and feared dead at the Trade Center is currently 6,333.

“Most folks don’t understand what 5,000 is until they visualize it,” said Robert Robbins, pastor of the 300-member church.

When the congregation gathers to pray among the crosses this morning, Robbins will tell the members he believes the terrorist attacks were “mercy from God.”

“It may be what it took to wake us up, so our children won’t have to go through this times ten. These people’s lives weren’t in vain. This type of hate could destroy everything.”
