From Times Wire Reports

Peru’s jailed former spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos, said Islamic militant Osama bin Laden used the Peruvian capital as his group’s Latin American “rest area,” according to a video transcript released by Congress.

In a videotape made secretly in January 2000, Montesinos--ousted President Alberto Fujimori’s right-hand man who is facing criminal charges--mentioned Bin Laden to a local official.

In their conversation about the privatization of Lima’s international airport, Montesinos said Islamic militants were entering Peru.

“This is the rest area . . . not to carry out operations in Lima but to act on white Americans in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and the rest of Latin America,” the transcript quotes Montesinos as saying.
