Across Asia, thousands of people gathered to mourn the victims of the attacks in the United States.

At a service in Singapore, they sang “Amazing Grace” and held candles in the sweltering tropical dusk. Leaders from Singapore’s nine major religious groups led the crowd of about 15,000.

In Bangkok, Thailand, nearly 2,000 Buddhist monks chanted prayers for victims and for the cessation of further violence.

Organized by the Buddhist University of Thailand, scores of lay people also attended the ceremony.

And in Beijing, about 100 residents of China’s capital gathered for a candlelight vigil, seeking to counter the gloating reaction of some Chinese over the actions.
