Robbers Steal Euro Coins Worth $4.6 Million

From Times Wire Reports

Robbers in masks and bulletproof vests broke into an Italian postal depository, stealing about $4.6 million in new euro coins--the second major euro heist so far.

The robbery in the southern port city of Bari came several weeks after an armored truck was held up in Germany. The euro will replace local currencies as legal tender in 12 European Union countries Jan. 1.

The thieves broke into the building Sunday using a wrecking ball and fled after an alarm sounded, said Salvatore Barilaro, a police spokesman who called the bandits a “very professional group.” Police are studying closed-circuit TV tapes in hopes of identifying the band.
