At Least 14 Die in Collapse of Coal Mine
From Times Staff Reports
A coal mine caved in, crushing at least 20 workers in an eastern Indian state, officials said.
The dead in Godda district of mineral-rich Jharkhand state included nine women, said S.P. Singh, director for technology at Eastern Coalfields Ltd. Fourteen bodies were recovered, Singh said.
The collapse appeared to have been caused by heavy rains in the thickly forested region, which is dominated by tribes, officials said.
Few other details were immediately available.
