Oak Disease’s Threat to Vineyards Studied
Scientists are researching whether vineyards could be at risk for a disease that is decimating nearby oak trees.
Sudden oak death is caused by a microbe that has been found harmful to more than a dozen plants and trees. It has killed thousands of oak trees and has spread across 10 coastal counties.
Researchers at UC Davis are preparing to perform lab tests on grapevines to tell whether they too are vulnerable.
“It seems to affect plants in a broad range of families,” said Kendra Baumgartner, a plant pathologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
