Pope John Paul II has invited the world’s 1 billion Roman Catholics to join in prayer Sunday for an end to the “inhumane brutality” between Israelis and Palestinians.

Only the power of prayer can change the “stubborn determination of those on both sides [who] continue to advance on the road of retaliation and vendetta,” the Roman Catholic pontiff said.

The pope, 81, who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land two years ago, said the “ever more tragic news” from the Middle East gives “the impression of an unstoppable drift of inhumane brutality.”
