From Times Wire Reports

The sheriff who was bitterly criticized for his handling of the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 said he will not seek reelection, complaining that the last three years “have just been a living hell.”

“It was Columbine, basically. You’ve got a tar baby that no matter who touched it, they are not going to walk away from it,” Jefferson County Sheriff John Stone, 52, told the Rocky Mountain News. “I still think we did everything we could do under impossible circumstances.”

Stone, elected to a four-year term in 1998, was sued along with his department and school officials by several families and victims, who say authorities ignored warning signs of the attack and botched the rescue.
